A process begun in 1993 saw the amalgamation of a collection of smaller municipalities into four new or expanded municipalities: the City of Charlottetown, the City of Summerside, the Town of Cornwall and the Town of Stratford. The following is a brief history of the amalgamation process.

| July 9/94 | City of Charlottetown, Executive Council Decision No. EC419/94, Charlottetown Area Municipalities Act - City of Charlottetown -- the determination of Electoral Wards and the Appointment of Chief Electoral Officer (includes ward map). |
| July 26/94 | A letter to Hon. Alan Buchanan, Minister of Provincial Affairs signed by the chairpersons of Cornwall, Eliot River and North River agreeing to one open ward for Charlottetown West with councillors elected at large. |
| July 28/94 | Charlottetown Area Municipalities Act - Proclaimed -- City of Charlottetown; Town of Charlottetown South; (later named - Stratford); and Charlottetown West (later named Cornwall). (Comes into force Mar. 31, 1995). |
| July 28/94 | Community of Winsloe officially became part of the new City of Charlottetown. |

| May 4/95 | An Act to Amend the Charlottetown Area Municipalities Act - (Assented to May 4, 1995) - Charlottetown South changes name to the Town of Stratford and Charlottetown West changes name to the Town of Cornwall. A portion of Alexandra known as the eastern portion of Upper Tea Hill Crescent (14 lots) shall become part of Stratford on January 1, 1997. |
| May 2/96 | An Act to amend The Municipalities Act - The term of office of a mayor, a councillor elected in the municipal elections scheduled to be held on Monday, November 4, 1996 shall be four years. This includes all communities and towns on PEI except the Cities of Charlottetown, Summerside and the Towns of Stratford and Cornwall. The municipal elections that would have been held on the first Monday of November 1999 shall be held on the first Monday of November, in the year 2000. |

| Nov. 6/2000 | Third Municipal Elections for the City of Charlottetown, City of Summerside, Town of Stratford and the Town of Cornwall. Municipal elections in all the communities and towns on PEI. |
| Nov. 3, 2003 | Fourth Municipal Elections for the City of Charlottetown, City of Summerside, Town of Stratford and the Town of Cornwall. Municipal elections in all the communities and towns on PEI. |
| Feb. 24, 2004 | The Charlottetown City Council appointed Justice Kenneth R. MacDonald, Frank McAulay and George Likely to review the boundaries of the ten electoral wards and to research and provide information to the community in regard to the issue of elections at large - implications and ramifications of this system. |
| July 2004 | The Summerside City Council appointed Justice George McMahon, Layton Schurman and Mike Gallant to review the boundaries of the eight electoral wards. |
| Oct. 2004 | The Stratford Town Council appointed Lorne Moase as a one-man commission to study the electoral wards within the town. Mr. Moase is also to question the residents about whether they would prefer the current ward system of elected councillors or would they like to adopt an at-large system. |
| Nov. 2006 | Municipal Elections were held under newly approved ward boundaries for the cities of Charlottetown and Summerside and the town of Stratford. The town of Cornwall municipal election was run on an open ward system as established in 1994. The term of office for mayors and councillors was extended by provincial legislation from the traditional three year term to a term of four years. |
