The Commission on P.E.I.'s Electoral Future has provided an application of the d'Hondt method. The application uses the results of the P.E.I. provincial election in 1996 [PDF, 75KB] to illustrate. The 1996 election results used in the example are adjusted to fit the proposed Mixed Member Proposed Model. The popular vote for each party was determined by totaling all votes cast for individual candidates within each party.
The number of district seats is determined by applying the ratio of the number of actual seats won per party in the 1996 election to 17 districts. The Commission has proposed that the electoral system in the province reduce the number of electoral districts from 27 to 17. For illustration purposes, 18-8-1=27, becomes 11-5-1=17.
